Carine Mbembi Whyte grew up in the Bandundu village and tribe of the Democratic Republic of Congo. In that village — as in most rural communities across Central Africa — nature provided everything. Plants for medicine. Oils for skin. Roots and leaves for hair. There were no synthetic products. There was no need for them.
When Carine moved to London at 10, she carried that knowledge with her. When she studied Biomedical Sciences and Cellular and Molecular Biology at Oxford, she carried it into the laboratory. And when she founded AfrohairCandy, she carried it back to the Congo — not as a tourist or an investor, but as someone who had never stopped belonging to that land.
The Congo farm is the physical expression of everything AfrohairCandy stands for. Ingredients grown under our direct control, without synthetic intervention of any kind, in the most biodiverse ecosystem on earth. Harvested when they are ready. Used fresh. Nothing processed out. Nothing added.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is home to the Congo Basin — the world's second largest rainforest after the Amazon. The biodiversity of this ecosystem is extraordinary. The variety of plants, botanical compounds, minerals and living systems that exist within it is found nowhere else on earth.
This is not incidental to what AfrohairCandy does. It is the reason certain ingredients in our formulas — Bulukutu and Congolese Eucalyptus Root in particular — cannot be sourced from anywhere else. They grow here. They grow because of this specific soil, this specific climate, this specific ecosystem. There is no substitute because there is no other place like this.
Our farm sits within this ecosystem. We farm in harmony with it — no pesticides, no synthetic fertilisers, no chemical intervention of any kind. We harvest what the land produces naturally, in season, when it is at its most potent. This is not modern organic farming philosophy. It is simply how farming has always been done in this part of the world.

Hair & SkinEverything grown on our Congo farm is produced without synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides or chemical intervention of any kind. Not because we follow an organic certification programme — but because this is how farming has always been done on this land and how it will always be done while this land belongs to us.
The Congo Basin soil is extraordinarily fertile without synthetic enhancement. The biodiversity of the ecosystem creates natural pest management systems that have operated for millennia before modern agricultural chemicals existed. We do not improve on what nature has already perfected. We work within it.
This is what #IfYouCantEatIt means in its most literal sense. Every ingredient grown on our Congo farm could be eaten exactly as it grows.
If it grows on our land — it is clean enough to eat and clean enough for your scalp.
In 2024 ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo disrupted our supply chain. Certain ingredients — including Bulukutu and Congolese Eucalyptus Root found only in the Congo — became temporarily impossible to source safely and reliably.
We did not substitute the ingredients with alternatives. We did not reformulate around their absence. We waited because the cellular biology of what Bulukutu and Congolese Eucalyptus Root do in our Chebe Hair and Scalp Serum is not something another ingredient can replicate. The formulas exist because of those specific botanicals from that specific land. Changing them would not be the same product. It would be a different product with the same name.
When supply resumed — we continued. When it happens again — and in a country with the history of the DRC it will happen again — we will wait again.
This is not a commercial decision. It is a commitment to the standard that this brand was built on and will never compromise.
