According to studies, a massive 80 percent of all beauty products may contain or be contaminated with Petroleum Jelly, which has been linked to cancer and other health issues, as Petroleum Jelly is a known carcinogen. How much you’re exposed to depends on the product you’re using: it’s in 82% of hair dyes, 45% of self-tanners and 36% of face moisturisers.
Not only is it is filled with carcinogenic chemicals linked to cancer, the chemicals also cause hormonal imbalances, sensitivity, allergies and respiratory issues.Within 26 seconds 80% of what you put on your skin will be absorbed into your blood stream – which completely bypasses the liver and petroleum-based products are no exception, hence why they are able to cause serious health issues.
Because Petroleum Jelly is non-breathable, and a non-moisture-adding product that has carcinogens, it doesn’t nourish and hydrate your skin the way that is needed to prevent ageing. The barrier process described above in 8 below inhibits this moisturizing affect and causes collagen breakdown. Specifically, when petroleum jelly coats the skin, it blocks the skin’s natural ability to breathe and absorb nutrients, which slows the cell renewal process and causes the skin to pull the necessary moisture and nutrients from within. This leads to collagen breakdown over time, which in turn causes wrinkles! Instead of nourishing your skin, petroleum jelly creates the illusion of hydration by making the surface of your skin appear soft and supple, when in fact it dries out the skin by preventing the circulation of air and moisture. Additionally, its thick, sticky texture traps dirt and toxins and is incredibly difficult to wash off. This can aggravate the skin and block pores, resulting in sensitivity and blemishes.
As mentioned above, Petrolatum is one of the numerous products which contain xenoestrogens, chemicals which cause hormone disruption and may throw estrogen out of balance in your body. These chemicals may act on hormone receptors in your body and lead to oestrogen dominance. It's then linked to causing infertility, menstrual problems, accelerated ageing, allergies and autoimmune problems as well as nutrient deficiencies, sleep problems and even some types of cancers.
As published in the new scientist, paediatricians found that infants treated with petroleum jelly were more likely to develop systemic candidiasis (fungal infections) because the tight seal created a warm, moist place for fungi to grow. the same study also found that women who used petroleum jelly were 2.2 times more likely to test positive for bacterial vaginosis.
Take the “for external use only” warnings seriously. All branded Petroleum jelly products are not to be used internally. Do not eat or insert petroleum jelly. Avoid using petroleum jelly for masturbation or as a vaginal lubricant. According to studies, 40 percent of women who used it as a lubricant frequently develop fungal or bacterial infections.
The list is of Petroleum jelly's side effects is long, but these are the main points of the dangers. After all, you wouldn't drink petrol, so why would you put it on your skin or your hair?
Are there natural alternatives?

Aloe Vera is a tropical plant that grows wild and has been cultivated as treatment for centuries.
It’s significance in Ancient Africa was immense as it was used for medicinal purposes in several cultures.
Used as a cosmetic, Queen Nefertiti and Cleopatra used it as part of their regular beauty regimes, and it was known in Egypt as the plant of immortality. During wars, it was used to treat warrior’s wounds, burns and to reduce fevers.
From my own experience in my village the elders used drops of aloe vera gel daily to their eyes. This was said to clear cataract and was also a treatment for glaucoma. I remember the first thing that would be applied to a insect bite, or a graze would be Aloe Vera, to clean and disinfect the area, and control inflammation. We used the gel as a cleanser for our hair and used it again after cleansing to moisturise daily. To date, across Africa and Asia, it is used for a multitude of health treatments, used in dermatology and in the western world it has been heavily commercialised for cosmetology, but despite its many healing benefits, surprisingly, it has yet to be used in pharmacy.
This Botanical plant’s fleshy leaves are composed of 3 layers. The inner gel that contains 99% liquid and the rest are made of glucomannans, Amino acids, lipids, sterol and vitamins.
The middle layer which is the yellow bitter sap, contains anthraquinones and glycosides and the thick outer layer has 15-20 cells called the rind, which protect the function and synthesizes carbohydrates and protein. Inside this rind are vascular bundles responsible for transportation of substances such as water and starch.
Aleo vera contains in total 75 active constituents in vitamins, enzymes, minerals, sugar, lignin, saponins, salicylic acids and amino acids, making it a super plant that can actively heal, protect, moisturise, nourish, and soothe the body inside and out.
HEALING PROPERTIES
Aloe vera contains growth hormones that significantly increase collagen and changes collagen composition, while also minimising scar tissue.
This plant has also been known to have protective effects against radiation. On application to skin, aloe vera gel produces an antioxidant protein called metallothionein, which scavenges hydroxyl radicals and prevent UV Rays from being absorbed.
It’s anti-inflammatory properties stem from the compound called C-Glucosyl Chromone, that is known to sooth, calm and rebuild skin.
For the Immune system, there have been studies that have been carried out to conclude that Aloe Vera has the ability to strengthen the immune system, it has a positive influence on cardio vascular functions and it contains molecules and compounds that are capable of limiting and preventing attacks to the immune system, to the point of regressions of cancerous cells.
Aleo Vera is known as a powerful laxative and a digestive tract cleanser.
The anti viral and anti tumour properties it holds are due to its direct ability to stimulate the immune system. It inactivates various viruses such as herpes, Varicella Zoster and Influenza. It has also been used to shrink tumours as research continues of finding alternatives to cancer Chemoprevention.
Aloe Vera has been used to treat the following conditions:
Seborrheic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Genital Herpes, Skin Burns, type 2 Diabetes, HIV Infection, Cancer Prevention, Heart Disease Prevention, Ulcerative Colitis wound Healing, Pressure Ulcers, Mucositis, Radiation Dermatitis, Acne, Lichen Planus, Frostbites, Aphthous Stomatitis, Constipation, Hypertension, Glaucoma, Cataract, Hair Loss.
Research has found that those who use fresh Aloe Vera are less susceptible to developing diabetes, hypertension, cancers and heart disease.
Moisture/Anti Ageing Effects On Skin
Aloe Vera helps to bind moisture to skin, as it stimulates fibroblasts which produce the collagen and elastin fibres, making your skin more elastic and less wrinkled.
It also has cohesive effects on the superficial flaking epidermal cells by sticking them together, which soften skin cells. It’s also known to tighten pores as it’s high in zinc.
It’s high liquid content which are filled with minerals and vitamins, are perfect for dry skin associated conditions, as they improve your skin’s integrity, decrease the appearance of fine lines and they have anti acne effects while balancing skin tone and removing blemishes.
Aloe Vera contains 6 antiseptic effects, and they have the inhibitory action on fungi bacteria and skin viruses.
For Hair
Aloe Vera has been known to promote growth as it keeps scalp clean due to a special enzyme it has called proteolytic enzymes. They breakdown dead skin cells on your scalp that may clog hair follicles, which stops hair growth being as efficient as it should be. It also allows great blood circulation on scalp and keeps follicles producing Sebum more efficiently. Aloe Vera prevents flakes and itchiness on scalp and has properties to prevent UV damage on your hair. Its rich in vitamins, antioxidants, amino acids that strengthens and gives hair elasticity by opening cuticles and provides intense moisture. Due to it’s high mineral content like copper and zinc, it has been proven that Aloe vera reduces breakage and promotes healthy hair growth.

It is true that we often see thinning hair as we grow older. Does this mean hair thinning and hair loss are age related? I can tell you that thinning hair is not a natural occurrence. It depends on the products you use and the way you treat your hair, as to the results you get after a period of time. I've travelled extensively through Africa & the Caribbean and I have always noted that the men and women in the rural parts, (the villages) have healthy hair well into their old ages but that not being the case in the capital cities and in the western hemisphere.
In fact, in my village hair loss and skin irritations are seen as the first signs of warning for a major illness, no matter your age. It's ever so rare. |

]]>In my village in Congo, we use charcoal, the one leftover from the wood fire, after cooking. We use a tree stem called Telisa, we use Coconut Oil, Ginger, and Sugar Cane, and we use our fingers and water if all else fails, as we truly don't have access to other forms of toothpaste in the rural parts of Congo.
From sheer observations, memory loss doesn't seem to be an issue with our elders back home, although there are no studies to confirm this. It has been noted though that African teeth are very strong and secure, because not only are there serious health risks linked to conventional tubes of toothpaste, but together with the use of plastic toothbrushes, they remove enamel from your teeth, making them very sensitive, and they recede your gums all of which can lead to you losing your teeth prematurely.
With AfroSkinCandy, we are taking you back to our roots, by using just what nature has provided for us to use for our personal care. Our toothpaste is made with 2 simple active ingredients, African Ginger and Coconut Oil.
In turn, they clean your teeth and your mouth, completely eliminating bad breath. Our toothpaste is a natural teeth whitener, that removes plaque, protects your enamel, removes stains and ensures your gums are healthy, preventing gum disease. This way you get to keep your teeth for longer, with complete peace of mind that your health will not be at risk.
We dare to be different from ancient recipes passed down from our ancestors by using just plants, seeds and oils to produce high-quality products without compromising on your health while achieving amazing results.

Split ends are straggly and uneven at the ends, with the lengths looking flat and dull. This is because the cuticles (the overlapping scales that cover the hair strand's core) are damaged, they don't lie down flat against the fibre or curl around each hair as they usually would.
This means the light does not reflect as well off the hair, which is why people with split ends often notice a lack of shine to their hair. The damaged cuticles are also less supple, and they tend to tangle, create knots, and break.
They also do not absorb products and so they’re really dry. More so, the damage has the potential to travel down the airshaft, destroying the length of hair. This makes it difficult to retain length and have healthy hair.
This is a statement of the fragility of afro hair… Split ends can be caused by towel drying and harsh brushing of your hair. Rubbing against the hair too roughly can weaken the cuticles and even break the fibre. Instead, it’s better to squeeze out excess moisture using a cotton t-shirt before allowing your hair to air dry.
Another known cause of split ends is combing hair dry….Heat damage is one of the major causes of split ends and when too high, it breaks the chemical bonds, which normally provide strength to the hair fibre. This is why we recommend you avoid heat to your hair completely.
There's really nothing that can be done about split ends except to cut them off.
Once you've gotten rid of them, it's time to ensure you are practising kind methods of manipulating your hair, while using the right products to support you in your journey.
Using AfroHairCandy will ensure that your trimming is kept to a minimum, as your hair will be well-nourished and moisturised. Our products are so nourishing that together with correct practices of hair handling, they will minimise split ends from occurring.
LOC Method: The ingenuity our ancestors had in developing this method of conditioning our curly hair, is to this day a lifesaver that works on every hair type.
Applying our Moisture spray, followed by the Moisturiser/Leave-in Conditioner and Chebe Butter to your hair is the AfroHairCandy LOC method. This is vital prior to putting your hair in a protective style, after using our Deep Conditioning Treatment.
Once your hair is a protective style, ensure that every few days you are applying the loc method through the length of your hair, paying particular attention to your ends and keeping them tucked away, to protect them from the elements.
This works so well due to the fresh plants in our products. they give your hair elastin, they open the cuticles to offer moisture and nourishment, while the oils are there to seal the moisture in protecting hair from breakage of every kind.
Using wood on your hair will make a huge difference in ensuring you are staying on the positive path of doing what is best for your hair. Our Bamboo combs and brushes distribute natural oils evenly through your hair shaft, and they don't tear your hair.
Wood communicates well with you, and so when there's a Knott or tangle in your hair, our Bamboo combs and brushes, will stop at the pull so that you do not tear your hair, but use your fingers to gently detangle. This in turn also helps to prevent split ends.
Reducing heat to your hair, and ensuring your air styling your hair gently will make the world of difference. Please remember that afro hair is the most fragile hair of all hair types and so it really needs your TLC plus plenty of patience.
Using silk for hair bands, pillowcases and headscarves will be your best friends in your hair journey. Silk helps to prevent split ends as they do not tear your hair, they do not absorb moisture nor cause friction hair loss.
It is our privilege to guide you through your hair journey.

Dear Reader.
Everything you have been told is untrue. Natural hair products are bad for you. And I spent 942 words proving it to you, so the next time someone tries to convince you that natural hair products are good for you. You'll be well informed because in today's blog post. I dig up all the reasons why these products cause more chaos than all the hair problems you can think of combined.
I hope I didn't reveal this to you too late. My God! I hope you don't have some of these natural hair products in your possession already. Because if you have them and you have been tricked into using them. You might have done some serious damage to your hair. Anyway, all that ends today. Because with what you are about to read. Nobody else will ever trick you into using these natural hair products.
We know there are so many narratives out there so we wanted you to know the subtle differences that are pushed in the Afro Hair Market.
Today, the one we'll be looking at is the difference between Natural Hair Products and Natural Products for Hair.
You might have heard the former but you might not have heard the latter. Not to worry, We are happy to explain...
These are products designed for natural hair. They will usually contain essential oils, and they usually don't contain Lye as this ingredient is known for changing curl patterns. They may also contain extracts from plants such as Aloe Vera.
This is not great because these products still contain a huge amount of fillers, preservatives, alcohols, sulphates, silicon, and all other ingredients that allow the products to increase the volume of the natural ingredients and decrease production costs.
Alcohol is bad for your hair/scalp as it sucks out all the moisture from your hair, making it very dry and brittle within a very short time of applying any product that contains this ingredient.
It also is a known irritant of the scalp, causing various forms of dermatitis, which can result in hair loss. Alcohols also roughen your hair's cuticles, which causes frizz and it's generally seen as a fast track way to creating breakage.
Apart from Alcohol, Sulphates are a known scalp irritant. They disturb your production of natural oils as your follicles close as soon as the hair is exposed to them. This leads to your scalp being very dry and flaky. If your follicles are unable to produce Sebum (natural oils) your hair shaft will find it impossible to absorb moisture. This will lead to abnormal amounts of Shedding and inevitably will lead to hair thinning and balding.
Apart from Sulphates, Silicon is found in most Hair Conditioners. Although it isn't a toxic chemical, the coating of silicon on your hair shaft will make your hair smoother, however, it closes your cuticles which in turn does not allow absorption of moisture. The silicon coating on your hair also creates product build-up as everything that is applied to your hair sits on your hair shaft, not penetrating. Hair that is not nourished will be dry, brittle and prone to damage and breakage.
Don't forget All ingredients that end with OL are alcoholic, CON is Silicon, ATE is Sulphates, UM Sodium (a form of salt used as preservatives) Sometimes these ingredients can be masked by using other scientific names such as Sulphate Laureth is a form of Sulphate. Sulphates can also be written as Sulfate, to create more confusion... It's the same as Sulphate!
These are products that are 100% Chemical Free.
The full list of Ingredients in Natural Products for Hair are ingredients that you can eat.
Products that contain no chemicals are what nature intended for us to use on our hair, skin and the entire body as part of our self-care. The ingredients list of your products should not contain a single ingredient that does not grow from the ground.
As this is how nature intended for us to look after our hair, the body develops no defence mechanisms in shutting your cuticles or shrinking your follicles at its exposure.
Natural products for hair will nourish your hair, as the cuticles remain open to receive moisture, even during the cleansing process.
Those of us with curly hair do not produce Sebum efficiently in the western hemisphere. This is because its production relies on the sun and the ability to sweat, on your scalp. This combination is rare in cold and dry weather, and so the little natural oils that we do produce need to be cherished. It plays a vital role in maintaining healthy hair and scalp.
All products that contain preservatives and Chemicals strip hair of this precious natural oil, leaving your hair vulnerable to damage and your scalp irritable. On the contrary, Natural Products for Hair allow you to maintain healthy hair and scalp, as it does not strip your hair of natural oils nor coat your hair to become impenetrable to moisture. It allows your scalp to be healthy while producing rapid growth, your hair will be moist, with minimal shedding and your ends will be strong with no breakage.
If your Natural Products for hair are also Organic then it's a huge bonus, as non Organic ingredients will contain Fertilisers and Pesticides which will penetrate the core of the ingredients, changing its DNA and making it inefficient in its properties.
Natural products have a multitude of functionalities and they do not depend on hair type.
Don't forget 100% Chemical Free products should be fridge stored products with a short shelf life. They should go mouldy if not kept in temperature controlled environment or if kept past the expiry date. They cause no health risks as they are plant-based products with Crude Oils.
With AfroHairCandy we are proud to be the only Cosmetics Company in the world, hand-making a full range of 100% Natural, Organic Products made with just Plants, Seeds and Oils. No Chemicals, No Preservatives, No Artificial Colouring, No Artificial Perfumes.
This is really important in order to ensure that we are giving ourselves the best chance to maintain healthy hair and scalp as nature intended. Our products offer rapid hair growth, drastically reduced shedding, and no breakage. In cases of hair loss, they reverse it and regrow your hair with the safety of the ingredients in mind.

A Healthy scalp has a natural sheen. It's smooth, supple with no bumps, no redness, no flacks and no signs of irritations. A scalp like the one above will produce thick strands of hair in all its follicles while retaining hair with only the normal amount of daily shedding.
Dermatitis is a general term for conditions that cause inflammation of the skin. Examples include atopic dermatitis (eczema), contact dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff). These conditions cause red rashes, dry skin, sores, and itchiness among other symptoms and if not treated they can develop into psoriasis that then becomes difficult to treat. They also can cause hair loss as the affected areas are usually itchy, causing trauma to the scalp and effectively causing patches of hair loss.
Avoiding chemicals in your cosmetic products has never been easier. AfroHairCandy's range of products are 100% Chemical Free, Preservatives Free, Fragrance Free, with no Artificial Colouring, made with just plants, Seeds and Oils.
Our products will heal your scalp from scalp irritations, getting rid of dry skin, sores, bumps, flakes whilst ensuring your scalp is supply and an inviting environment for growth.

We don't want to burst your bubble about covering your greys or changing your hair colour for fun or style, but we want to point out the damage it causes to your hair and to support you through doing it as safely as possible.
When you apply dye to your hair, you're opening up cuticles so that colour can be deposited. This invasion can cause damage to your hair as dye penetrates hair fibre and breaks a number of the structural bonds that hold protein stands together. This leaves hair brittle and porous, in turn, more prone to damage. The harsh chemicals in dyes also penetrating your scalp will not help with maintaining a healthy scalp.
Hair underneath the scalp cannot be affected by dye, and so hair dye does not stop hair growth, although if the scalp is exposed to the dye, it can become damaged which in turn can affect hair growth.
The manipulation of airshaft white applying the dye, in rubbing and combing hair while dyeing hair loosens hairs in Telogen, causing increased shedding.
Hair dye physically weakens hair shafts, increasing breakage caused hair loss.
Hair dyes can cause hair Telogen Effluvium hair loss. The symptoms include hair thinning and an increase in shedding.
Ensuring dye does not touch your scalp is the best advice we can give, as the less chemical exposure to your scalp, the more you reduce the chances of developing scalp irritations and Dermatitis.
Using our Multifunctional Deep Conditioning Treatment right after washing out the Dye will open the cuticles to restore moisture to your hair and to restore protein lost due to the colouring process.
Applying the LOC method, (our Moisture Spray, Moisturiser/Leave-in Conditioner and Chebe Butter) will sustain moisture daily to your hair, and ensure it has elastin while reducing breakage and shedding drastically. The suggested products for our loc method work well applied simultaneously due to the rich blend of fresh Plants, Seeds and Oils. They will gradually neutralise the chemicals hair have been exposed to while reducing the chances of damage travelling down each hair shaft.
When your hair is dyed, please do not ignore the power or regular deep conditioning.

We see so many cases of hair loss and we see far too many people who don't understand how they lost their hair, and so we thought we'd try to explain hair loss in the afro/curly hair community with a little bit more detail.
This is what a healthy follicle looks like. The hair shaft is out to receive oxygen, sunlight and nourishment. This is all very important as if hair is not nourished, it will break. Beneath the scalp is where the real work is taking place. The scalp's job is to protect the Epidermis. The Epidermis gives blood supply to the scalp and protects the glands and blood vessels that are there to produce and nourish hair from within. The Sebaceous Gland produces Sebum (AKA Natural Oils) The Arrector Pili Muscle feeds the Epidermis the blood supply that comes from the blood vessels, which are connected to the Hair Pipilla to feed hair follicles with oxygenated blood (red blood vessels) while deoxygenated blood is taken back from the hair bulb and to back to the heart to be recycled. (Yes we breathe through our scalp too!). The Epidermis is a layer of fat, made to protect the skull and the functionalities of everything I have named above.
From left to right, the first picture shows healthy hair growth, with blood vessels attached to the follicles, and a full-sized hair follicle. As the follicle experiences trauma (could be from traction pulling, chemicals and suffocation) they shrink in size and blood vessels weaken as they try to hold on (second illustration) as less blood and oxygen feeds the hair shaft and it starts to detach from the follicle. If the trauma continues, the blood vessels and all other attachments that feed the follicle completely detach from the blood vessels (third illustration), leaving the hair above lifeless and dead. The scalp and Epidermis also get damaged (as shown on the picture below, the start of hair loss from traction) from the follicle and the follicle shrinks further as the hair shaft is now too weak to sustain even low level manipulation. The hair shaft falls out completely and closes in the last illustration. This closing could be the death of the follicle or it can lay dormant like this for many years... depending on the severity of the trauma.
The motions above are typical of Traction Alopecia, which is rife in the Afro Community.
It is completely preventable and can be stopped and reversed very quickly depending on it’s severity.
Traction alopecia is caused by having very tight hairstyles that pull your hair back, such as tight buns, ponytails, cornrows, braids, extensions and weave. The hair loss cure for traction alopecia is really simple – just let your hang loose while still protecting it from the elements and tucking away your ends.
The best ways to avoid hair loss?
Stop traumatising your scalp with bad styling, bad products and…
Using the right Products is Essential
