Dermatitis: Types, Causes, Treatments & Symptoms (Most Underestimated Skin Disease)

Written By Carine Whyte.
Dear reader,
Although skin conditions are generally colour blind, the black community seem to be more affected by dry skin conditions.  It also seems with us, it becomes more server with time, as skin irritations are not diagnosed quickly on darker skin tones, or they are misdiagnosed and mistreated for a long time.  We are twice more likely to be effected with dermatitis than other demographics and so we wanted to take this opportunity to explain what dermatitis is and give you a  guide on how to prevent it/treat it.

THIS IS A HEALTHY SCALP.

A Healthy scalp has a natural sheen. It's smooth, supple with no bumps, no redness, no flacks and no signs of irritations. A scalp like the one above will produce thick strands of hair in all its follicles while retaining hair with only the normal amount of daily shedding.

Dermatitis is a general term for conditions that cause inflammation of the skin. Examples include atopic dermatitis (eczema), contact dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff). These conditions cause red rashes, dry skin, sores, and itchiness among other symptoms and if not treated they can develop into psoriasis that then becomes difficult to treat. They also can cause hair loss as the affected areas are usually itchy, causing trauma to the scalp and effectively causing patches of hair loss.

Below is a scalp suffering from an irritation referred to as dermatitis.
