Coconut Oil and AfroHairCandy🍃

Why we use Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil as a hair oil seems to be one of those things you either love or hate.
At one point, it was a staple for many particularly those of us who have grown up in the Caribbean, but it recently seems to have fallen out of favour, banished back to the kitchen cupboard as a cooking ingredient.
We at AfroHairCandy🍃 actually love coconut oil as a natural produce ingredient and we can go as far as saying it's almost impossible to make a natural product without it. It has an undeserved bad rep.
Here’s why we love it:
It fortifies your hair.
Coconut oil has a low molecular weight and is mostly made of a medium chain fatty acid called lauric acid. This enables it to be absorbed deep into your hair shaft, where its molecular structure is attracted to the protein in your hair. This oil-protein binding reinforces the core of your hair shaft, making it less susceptible to breakage.
This is particularly beneficial during the wash process. When we wash and condition our hair it expands to accommodate the excess water. As it dries the hair contracts and this process of expansion and contraction is stressful to the delicate nature of afro and curly hair, causing the hair’s cuticles (the protective outer layer of a hair strand) to crack, split and frizz. This is called Hygral Fatigue.
With the cuticle compromised it’s less able to protect your hair’s inner protein, making it fragile and prone to breakage. When Coconut Oil is used during the cleansing process, as with our Co-Wash and Deep Conditioning Treatment, it protects your hair from Hygral-Fatigue as it is absorbed into your hair fibre when it naturally swells, protecting its inner protein. As your hair contracts to dry experiences less trauma and damage.

Coconut Oil supports hair growth:
Its ability to protect your hair’s central protein structure limits breakage, helping you retain length. Also, when applied to your scalp it nourishes and cleanses, removing build-up and invigorating your hair follicles, stimulating growth.
It helps treat dandruff Antibacterial and rich in fatty acids that have an anti-inflammatory effect, Coconut Oil reduces irritation and flakes. These properties, combined with its exfoliating ability, means it helps you maintain a healthy scalp microbiome. This is the collection of organisms that live on your scalp. When their harmony is thrown off balance, you develop irritations like dandruff, itching, flaking and even hair loss. Maintaining a healthy scalp microbiome is essential for healthy hair and growth.
Let’s not forget it’s also great for the skin:
 Anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and rich in fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, coconut oil;
Keeps your skin soft, supple and strong, reducing the appearance of lines, wrinkles and environmental stress. It's one of the 5 ingredients in our Body Butter as Protects your skin from insects, flies, ticks, mosquitoes and bed bugs.
Reduces odour causing bacteria, making it an effective natural deodorant. Swiftly removes dirt and make-up whilst maintaining your skin’s protective moisture
barrier.
